My name is Maryam Al-Zoubi. I am a former prosecutor, and my work as a “crimmigration” attorney, meaning an attorney that works at the intersection and overlap of criminal and immigration issues, has led me to conclude that many in the immigration community require guidance on how the legal system actually works.
The stakes are high for immigrants in any encounter with law enforcement. Knowing how to navigate those encounters, in a way that’s respectful of law enforcement and protective of the rights of the immigrant is critical.
On this bilingual channel, where I host videos in Arabic and English, you can expect to find tips and information to help empower communities by letting viewers know how the legal system works.
I have a bit of southern drawl, as I myself am a Syrian-American who grew up in North Carolina before moving to work in Chicago as a social worker and then to New York City, where I was a bronx prosecutor. If you like my accent, great. If not, too bad!
